Singing Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5

Bachianas Brasileiras is a series of nine suites composed between 1930 and 1945. The series is considered one of the most outstanding works by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959). These suites represent a neoclassical phase in the composer's career.

Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 was written for soprano and eight cellos, comprising two movements:

  1. Aria (Cantilena), composed in 1939 with lyrics by Ruth Valladares Corrêa (1904-ca.1963)

  2. Dansa (Martelo), composed in 1945 with lyrics by Manuel Bandeira (1886-1968)
